History and Foundation Teams

A public meeting held at Vermont South Community House on Wednesday 13th July 1977 led to the formation of the Vermont South Cricket Club (VSCC), which entered two senior teams and two junior teams in the Box Hill Reporter District Cricket Association in 1977-78. Graham Ferguson was foundation President and Gary Butcher foundation Secretary. In his seven years at the club Gary was Secretary for 3 years, President for 2 years, Captain of the first eleven for the first 3 years and Club Champion on 4 occassions.

Of the 32 senior players who represented VSCC in its first season, 7 transferred from the disbanded St Lukes CC. The club was assisted by the availability of St Lukes equipment and a loan from the Vermont South Community Association. Both senior sides played in semi-finals and the club had a small operating surplus.

The club won its first premiership in 1979-80, with the seconds surviving a tied semi-final, advancing to the final because of a higher ladder position and defeating Bennettswood in B2 grade. The seconds went on to a hat-trick of B2 flags. The firsts tied in A1 Grade in 1985-86, and won A1 grade in 1990-91 and 1994-95.

VSCC has grown to be a strong club playing in the BHRDCA. It has been a club solidly founded in its local community, with a substantial emphasis on attracting junior players to the game and encouraging them to continue on to higher standards of cricket. The clubs record features over 25 families with two generations of senior grade players.

Vermont South continues to be a strong, competitive club in the BHRDCA. Its strong junior section should ensure this continues well into the new millenium.
